Matchday 20: The Fairy Tale of the Lucky Devils and the Tragedy of the Unfortunate Ravens
A matchday straight out of a drama textbook: While the football gods generously distributed their gifts, others had to watch as their best performances went unrewarded. On Matchday 20 of the Bundesliga, the discrepancy between what happened and what should have happened was bigger than the difference between Hoffenheim's Champions League ambitions and reality.
Game of the Week: When David Annoys Goliath – But Still Loses
At the Volksparkstadion, Hamburger SV and FC Bayern München delivered a spectacle that perfectly symbolizes why we need Expected Goals. The 2-2 between the Hanseatic side and the record champions tells a story of missed chances and a Bayern side that actually deserved to win.
With 1.93 xG against just 1.34 for HSV, the Munich side showed their class – yet the game ended in a draw. Bayern created the clearer scoring chances, but in the end both teams shared the points. A result that surely benefits HSV more than the league leaders, who once again proved: Even with the best squad in the league, you can drop points when the ball doesn't want to cooperate.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday: Hoffenheim Enchants the Statistics
TSG Hoffenheim earns the title "Lucky Devil of the Matchday" with an almost magical performance: 3-1 against 1. FC Union Berlin – and that with only 1.04 xG against 1.66 for the visitors. A delta of 2.5 points in favor of the Kraichgau side!
While Union Berlin had the clearer chances, Hoffenheim converted their few opportunities with the precision of a Swiss timepiece. At the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena, the laws of probability seemed suspended. A perfect example that football isn't mathematics class after all – even if Expected Goals sometimes suggest otherwise.
xG Victims: RB Leipzig and the Curse of Missed Chances
RB Leipzig and 1. FC Union Berlin share the dubious title of biggest hard-luck story. Both collected zero points despite deserving 2.5 according to Expected Points. For Leipzig it's particularly bitter: 1.77 xG against only 1.24 for 1. FSV Mainz 05, yet they lost 1-2.
The Saxons created the better chances but conceded at the wrong time. Mainz impressively proved that efficiency is sometimes more important than dominance – a lesson Leipzig had to learn painfully. While the visitors from Mainz achieved maximum returns with minimal means, Leipzig were left empty-handed despite their superiority.
Honest League Table: The Truth Hurts
A look at the Expected Points table reveals the true balance of power: FC Bayern München deservedly lead with 53 xP, but with 60 actual points still have 7 points of luck bonus in their account.
The really dramatic shifts happen behind them: Borussia Dortmund sit in 2nd place with 52 points but would only deserve 4th according to xP – 16.5 points of luck! A similar story for TSG Hoffenheim: 3rd place with 46 points, but only 31 xP suggest 5th place.
At the other end of the spectrum, Werder Bremen suffer under a real curse: With only 19 points in 17th place, but 28 xP that would be enough for 9th. A difference of nine points – that's almost cruel. FC St. Pauli faces similar circumstances: 20 points in 16th place, but 24.5 xP would mean 14th place.
Outlook: The Next Matchday Can Only Be More Normal
After such a chaotic matchday where Expected Goals seemingly took a holiday, statistics should take revenge next time around. Teams like Werder Bremen and St. Pauli have accumulated so much bad luck that an upward correction seems overdue.
Hoffenheim and Dortmund, however, continue to live dangerously: Those standing so far above their Expected Points must expect luck to turn eventually. Probability is a patient but relentless teacher.
Most exciting will be whether Leipzig can finally reap the rewards for their good performances or if the curse of missed chances continues. One thing is certain: In the honest table, the Saxons would be doing much better – but unfortunately points are only awarded for goals, not Expected Goals.
