The Bundesliga's Wheel of Fortune: When Expected Goals Become a Lottery
Matchday 21 of the Bundesliga was a prime example of why we love Expected Goals – and sometimes hate them too. While some teams wore their xG values like a perfectly tailored suit, others danced through the statistics with the elegance of an elephant in a china shop. Three teams managed to conjure real points from significantly worse chances, while others had to watch desperately as their solid performance was ignored by the football gods.
Game of the Week: Freiburg Works Magic at the Schwarzwald-Stadion
The clash between SC Freiburg and Werder Bremen was a masterclass in "efficiency beats dominance." SC Freiburg won 1-0, even though Werder Bremen created more than twice as many high-quality chances as the hosts with 1.82 xG versus 0.86 xG. An xG difference of 0.96 in favor of the visitors – and yet all three points go to Freiburg. Werder Bremen must feel like someone who picks six correct numbers in the lottery but forgot to submit their ticket.
Lucky Charms of the Matchday: Freiburg, Mainz and Hamburg Hit the Jackpot Zone
Three teams shared the title of "Lucky Charm of the Matchday" with a delta of +2.0 to +2.5 between expected and actual points. SC Freiburg leads this illustrious group: 3 points earned, only 0.5 xP deserved – a luck delta of 2.5. 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Hamburger SV followed closely behind, both with 3 points from just 1.0 xP. While SC Freiburg already sits 6 points above their xP value, Mainz is also diligently collecting bonus points (4 points above xP). Hamburger SV, meanwhile, got to celebrate a success – even if it wasn't statistically deserved.
xG Victims: Werder Bremen and the Art of Not Scoring
Werder Bremen is the poster child for a team that does everything right – except the most important thing. With a delta of -2.5 on the matchday (0 points from 2.5 xP) and now -9 points below their xP value for the season, Bremen are the tragic hero of the Bundesliga. They sit in 17th place but belong in 9th according to the xP table – a difference of eight positions! If football were an exam, Werder Bremen would have had the best preparation of all time but would still fail because they forgot to bring a pen.
1. FC Union Berlin (delta: -1.5) and 1. FC Heidenheim (delta: -1.0) are also failing to convert their performances into points. Heidenheim sits in last place with 14 points but would have deserved 20 points according to xP.
The Honest Table: The Great Rethink
The xP table paints a completely different picture than the official standings. While FC Bayern München deservedly tops this table too (albeit "only" with 7 bonus points), RB Leipzig would occupy second place – in reality, they only manage 5th. Borussia Dortmund, currently second, only belongs in 4th according to xP – with a whopping 16.5 luck points in their account.
TSG Hoffenheim (3rd place, belongs in 5th) and Bayer Leverkusen (6th place, also belongs in 6th) are other beneficiaries of football fortune. At the other end of the table, the real drama unfolds: Werder Bremen should be sitting safely in mid-table but are fighting relegation. FC St. Pauli (16th place) even belongs in the upper mid-table in 14th according to xP.
Outlook: Regression to the Mean or More Chaos?
Statistics teach us that luck and misfortune should balance out over the season. For Werder Bremen and FC St. Pauli, this could mean better times are coming – if they continue to show solid performances. Borussia Dortmund and TSG Hoffenheim, however, should bundle up: 16.5 and 15 bonus points respectively aren't sustainable long-term.
The next matchday will show whether the wheel of fortune keeps spinning or if Expected Goals finally become expected results again. One thing is certain: in the Bundesliga, nothing is more certain than unpredictability – except perhaps that Werder Bremen will collect more xG than points again next week.
