Fittingly, the biggest xG discrepancy of the matchday came in the game between Elversberg and FC Bayern München. An xG of 0.57 against 2.92 speaks for itself – FC Bayern München should really have dominated this game by the numbers. Yet in the end it was only a 1:2, a defeat for Elversberg, but with far less shame than the record champion's finishing would suggest. For FC Bayern München, it was the opening chapter of a pattern that could run through the whole season: endless chances, results with question marks.

Close behind sits the match between FC Augsburg and Bayer Leverkusen, where FC Augsburg, with an xG of just 1.0 against Bayer Leverkusen's 2.74, still fought out a 2:2 – a draw that, statistically speaking, was almost daylight robbery at the WWK Arena.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday

There are wins you earn, and there are wins you simply take. Eintracht Frankfurt clearly belongs in the latter category: with a meagre xG of 1.33 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (who actually posted 2.02), they left the Mewa Arena with a 3:1 away win. The gap of 2.5 between actual points (3) and expected points (0.5) makes Eintracht Frankfurt the undisputed lucky devil of the matchday. Not far behind: Schalke 04, who won 3:1 at Union Berlin despite their own xG (2.11) trailing the hosts' (2.57).

FC Bayern München also gets to enjoy a bit of luck-of-the-draw, albeit in homeopathic doses – a delta of 0.5 looks almost modest next to Frankfurt's mark.

On the flip side stands 1. FSV Mainz 05. At home against Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz created an xG of 2.02 – clearly more than their opponents – and still walked away with a 1:3 defeat. A delta of -2.5 makes them the biggest unlucky soul of the matchday. Looking at the numbers, you'd think Eintracht hadn't even been on the pitch – instead, they simply pocketed what wasn't really theirs to take.

Bayer Leverkusen and 1. FC Union Berlin also belong among the hard done by. Union Berlin picked up just one point fewer than expected against Schalke 04, but in a season still this young, every lost point stings.

The Honest Table

Anyone looking only at the official table sees SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund sitting proudly at the top – both with a healthy 9 points. The honest xP table, however, paints a different picture: there, FC Bayern München leads with 7.5 xPoints, followed by RB Leipzig, also on 7.5. SC Freiburg, however strongly they're performing, slips to 5th in the xP table – a difference of +3 showing that a fair bit of luck is involved here too.

It gets even more striking with Elversberg: 6th in the official table with 6 points, yet only 17th in the xP table with a meagre 1.5 xPoints. A difference of 4.5 – the biggest "positive outlier" of the entire matchday. On the other side stands 1. FSV Mainz 05, who with an xP of 7.5 should really be playing in the upper third of the table, but currently sit only 7th with 4 points. Bayer Leverkusen share this fate – 8th place in the table despite an xP record that would comfortably put them in the top five.

Outlook

The season is still young, but the patterns are already emerging. Elversberg is unlikely to keep its lucky streak going forever – regression to the mean is one of the few certainties in football. For 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, the next matchday could bring the turnaround, if their finishing just normalises a little. And FC Bayern München? The record champion should probably start worrying if their efficiency doesn't soon catch up with their dominance – even the best teams can't keep collecting points on a low flame forever.
