Three Wins, a Calculator, and the Collective Facial Expression of Hoffenheim

Hook-Intro

Matchday 7 of the Bundesliga proved once again: football is no laboratory experiment, even if the xG stats would love for it to be. While three teams get to feel like the weekend's lottery winners, TSG Hoffenheim sits there holding the bill, wondering why 2.03 accumulated Expected Goals don't automatically convert into three points. Spoiler: because the opponent scores when it matters, and you don't.

Game of the Week

The clear number one in xG discrepancy comes from Augsburg: FC Augsburg racked up a staggering 2.39 xG against 1. FC Union Berlin, while Union managed a measly 0.59 – and yet it ended 1:1 in the WWK Arena. An xG diff of 1.8 is unmatched league-wide this matchday, and for Augsburg it must have felt like missing a penalty after already seeing the ball shiver the net in their mind's eye. A point for the fairness stats, but two points short in the actual table.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday

No fewer than three teams share the throne of fortunate souls with a delta of +2: FC Bayern München, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bayern won 3:1 in Freiburg, even though the xG numbers (1.98 to 1.66) promised a much tighter affair – but who's complaining about being record champions and lucky on top of it? Werder Bremen turned things around in Mainz with a 2:3 win, despite Mainz leading 2.36 to 1.87 in xG. And Borussia Mönchengladbach won 3:2 in Stuttgart, despite trailing 1.62 to 1.76 in xG. Three wins that look more like wishful thinking than clinical finishing on paper.

xG Victim

The biggest unlucky soul this time isn't entirely clear-cut, as two teams share the sorry podium with -1.5: 1. FC Köln and FC Augsburg. Köln only managed a 0:0 against Schalke 04 despite a 1.63 to 1.03 xG advantage – anyone who dominates like that and ends up without a goal has every right to take a long, hard look at the shooting range in training. Augsburg knows that feeling twice over, as described above. Close behind is Stuttgart at -1, who left the pitch as losers against Gladbach despite an xG edge (1.76 to 1.62). A matchday for the league of disappointed chance-wasters.

The Honest Table

Comparing the official table with the xP table quickly reveals: Borussia Dortmund officially sit 2nd with 17 points, but by xP (12.5) they'd be closer to 4th – a diff of +4.5 speaks to a decent amount of fortune. Even more extreme is Elversberg: officially 8th with 10 points, but by Expected Points only good for 4 – a difference of +6, earning them the title of this season's "biggest winner." At the other end of the truth spectrum suffers TSG Hoffenheim: officially 10th with 9 points, but by xP they'd be 2nd with 14.5 points. A deficit of 5.5 points that stings – Hoffenheim are essentially playing Champions League football and standing there looking like a mid-table side. Werder Bremen (+3.5) and Hamburger SV (+4.5) can also officially celebrate more table positions than their performance would suggest.

Only FC Bayern München and SC Freiburg stand solidly at the top in both tables – here, reality actually matches the stats for once. A true rarity in these chaotic times.

Outlook

With nine out of nine matches fully completed, there are no excuses this time, no Monday games still pending – a clean matchday for the stat nerds. The burning question for the next matchday: can Hoffenheim finally convert their xG dominance into points, or will TSG remain the eternal moral victors without a winner's bonus? And will Elversberg keep their castle in the air standing a few more weeks before the stats mercilessly present the bill? As for Bayern, the question will soon arise whether dominance on paper eventually translates back into dominance on the pitch – though currently, even half of it seems to be enough.
