La Liga Matchday 11: When Efficiency Meets Luck
The Miracle of Vallecas Fails to Materialize
Matchday 11 of La Liga was a feast for statistics lovers and a nightmare for anyone who believes in football justice. While Real Madrid and Barcelona reinforced their league leadership with solid performances, we witnessed a spectacle of extremes: teams that turned water into wine, and others who despite having the best chances came away empty-handed.
Match of the Week: When Villarreal Cracked the Efficiency Algorithm
Villarreal CF showed on matchday 11 how to turn 1.81 xG into a proud four goals – a masterpiece of clinical finishing that swept Rayo Vallecano off the pitch 4-0. At the Estadio de la Cerámica, Expected Goals were relegated to a theoretical construct while the hosts coldly converted every other opportunity.
Real Madrid also demonstrated impressive efficiency at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu against Valencia CF (4-0): 2.75 xG was converted into four goals, while Valencia remained chanceless with 0.55 xG. A perfect example of why Los Blancos aren't at the top of the table by accident.
Lucky Charm of the Matchday: Real Sociedad with Perfect Timing
Three teams share the crown of lucky charm: Real Betis, Deportivo Alavés and Real Sociedad each collected three points despite their Expected Points only yielding one point. Real Sociedad stands out particularly: In the Basque derby against Athletic Club they won 3-2, even though the Expected Goals of 1.17 to 1.27 actually favored the visitors. At the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta they proved that derby atmosphere is sometimes more important than statistical probabilities.
Real Betis showed similar ruthlessness: 3-0 against RCD Mallorca with 1.82 to 1.38 xG – not scandalously exaggerated, but certainly a performance that falls into the category "we'll gladly take it."
xG Victims: Athletic Club, Girona and Rayo as Hard-Luck Cases
At the other end of the spectrum gather the eternal hard-luck cases of the league. Athletic Club lost the Basque derby despite slightly better Expected Goals, Girona FC had to accept defeat 1-2 in Getafe despite the chance distribution (0.93 to 1.38 xG) favoring them. But the big loser of the matchday was Rayo Vallecano: The 4-0 thrashing in Villarreal was painful enough, and the fact that they statistically deserved a point doesn't make it any better.
These three teams share the fate of all xG victims: They often play decently, but the ball simply won't go into the opponent's goal.
Honest League Table: Villarreal Exposed as Hot Air
While FC Barcelona leads the league both in reality and Expected Points (61 vs. 54.5 xP), the honest table shows dramatic shifts. The biggest swindle of the season? Villarreal CF sits in 3rd place in reality with 51 points, but should be in 13th with only 27.5 xP under fair circumstances – an incredible discrepancy of 23.5 points!
Athletic Club, on the other hand, is the victim of the season: Actually in 8th place, they belong in 4th according to Expected Points. Eleven points difference – that's no longer bad luck, that's systematic injustice from the football gods.
Real Madrid (2nd place with +7.5) and Real Betis (5th place with +11) are also riding the wave of luck, while teams like Valencia CF, Rayo Vallecano and Levante UD consistently underperform their possibilities.
Outlook: Regression to the Mean is Waiting
Statistics are patient but relentless. Villarreal won't be able to maintain this 23.5-point difference forever – the only question is when the crash comes. Athletic Club, meanwhile, can hope for better times, as such systematic bad luck sooner or later reverses itself.
For the coming matchdays: Real Madrid and Barcelona will likely continue to extend their lead, as they belong among the best both in reality and statistically. The battle for European places will become exciting once the expected values assert themselves. And Villarreal? They'd better quickly collect a few more points before regression to the mean strikes.
In La Liga anything is currently possible – even that Expected Goals sometimes remain just a nice theory.
