La Liga Matchday 13: When Luck Meets Bad Luck
The Day of Big Surprises
What a crazy 13th matchday in Spanish La Liga! While the big names like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid continue to jostle at the top, the Expected Goals once again showed that football sometimes has little to do with justice. From lucky wins to bitter defeats despite tactical superiority – this matchday had everything a football heart desires (or drives you to despair).
Match of the Week: When Catalans Work Magic at Camp Nou
FC Barcelona's 4:0 victory against Athletic Club at Camp Nou looks like a dominant performance at first glance. But the xG values tell a different story: With 2.01 to 1.25 Expected Goals, the win was deserved, but nowhere near as clear-cut as the scoreline suggests. The Basques from Bilbao could well have provided surprises with better finishing. Instead, FC Barcelona once again showed their clinical edge in front of goal – a quality hallmark of genuine top teams.
Things got even more dramatic at RCDE Stadium, where RCD Espanyol delivered a real game of chance against Sevilla FC. With just 1.11 xG against 2.15, the Catalans still won 2:1. This is La Liga in its purest form: sometimes it's not the better performance that decides, but the luckier moment.
Lucky Winner of the Matchday: Espanyol Celebrates the Perfect Heist
RCD Espanyol can celebrate themselves as the big lucky winners of the 13th matchday. With 2.5 points more than their Expected Points (3 points earned, only 0.5 xP deserved), the Barcelonans pulled off a real coup. Against Sevilla FC, luck played the starring role – and sometimes you need exactly these kinds of games to swim with the big fish in the league. In the eternal debate between skill and luck, this victory was definitely to be attributed to Team Luck.
RC Celta de Vigo could also celebrate a stroke of luck: Despite a weak 0.9 xG against Deportivo Alavés, the Galicians won 1:0 and collected 2 points more than expected. Such victories can decide between survival and relegation at the end of the season.
xG Victims: Sevilla Bleeds in Barcelona
The biggest unlucky losers of the matchday come from Andalusia: Sevilla FC suffered a bitter 1:2 defeat at RCD Espanyol, even though they were clearly the better team with 2.15 to 1.11 xG. 2.5 Expected Points ended up pointless – that hurts and shows why football can sometimes be so cruel.
Real Betis can also sing a song about bad luck. Despite strong 2.38 xG against Girona FC (1.3 xG), the Andalusians left with only a 1:1 draw. 1.5 points were squandered through lack of efficiency – in a league where every point counts, such games can be bitterly regretted later.
Honest League Table: The Great Villarreal Show
A look at our honest table reveals the curiosity of the season: While Villarreal CF sits in 3rd place in the official table, they would only occupy 13th place based on Expected Points. With 23.5 points more than deserved, the Yellows are the league's luck team par excellence. Eventually this bubble will burst – the only question is when.
At the other end, Athletic Club suffers from chronic bad luck. Officially in 8th place, the Basques would be in 4th place with honest assessment – a difference of four places! With -11 points difference, they are the unlucky team of the season.
At the top, everything remains the same: FC Barcelona leads both officially and in the xP table, followed by Real Madrid. For both top teams, the relationship between performance and success largely matches up.
Outlook: Luck is a Fickle Thing
After 13 matchdays, it's becoming increasingly clear who's living beyond their means and who's being undervalued. For Villarreal CF, it will be exciting to see whether they can continue their lucky streak in the second half of the season. Athletic Club, on the other hand, can hope that the pendulum will soon swing in their direction – the performances are right, just not the results yet.
The next matchday will show whether xG justice is slowly asserting itself or whether we'll experience further surprising twists. After all, everything is possible in La Liga – and that's exactly what makes this league so fascinating.
