Royal Catastrophe: When the xG God Laughs at the Bernabéu

The Day Logic Took a Holiday

Matchday 15 of the Primera División has once again reminded us why football is the most beautiful of all games – and simultaneously the most frustrating for all statistics fans. While most results behaved themselves reasonably well, there was a performance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu that should drive every xG analyst to madness.

Game of the Week: Real Madrid – RC Celta de Vigo (0:2)

Sometimes the football god simply does what he wants – and on Saturday at the Bernabéu, he apparently wanted to humiliate Real Madrid. 2.49 to 0.93 in Expected Goals, 0:2 in the actual result. That's not just a slap in the face for statistics, that's a complete demolition of all logic.

Real Madrid should have left the pitch with 2.5 Expected Points based on their chances – instead they received a 0:2 thrashing from RC Celta de Vigo, who suddenly looked like a world-class team with a meager 0.93 xG. A delta of -2.5 points for Los Blancos – it could hardly be more bitter. This is the stuff manager discussions are made of, even though the performance actually was there.

RC Celta de Vigo, on the other hand, could feel like the big winner of the matchday: They turned 0.5 Expected Points into 3 real points. Sometimes luck is indeed more important than all the chance creation in the world.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday: RC Celta de Vigo

Let's talk about the art of being in the right place at the right time – or rather: the art of making a lot out of very little. RC Celta de Vigo delivered a masterclass in efficiency on Matchday 15 that is second to none.

With a plus of 2.5 points compared to Expected Points, Celta sits atop the luck podium of the matchday. At the Bernabéu, they showed that sometimes a cold finish is worth more than half an hour of possession. This brings them to 6th place in the official table with 37 points – in the honest xP table, they would still be in the same position with 32 Expected Points, but with significantly less cushion.

xG Victim: Real Madrid

And there we have it again, the eternal football tragedy: You play well, create chances like there's no tomorrow, and still leave the pitch as losers. Real Madrid experienced firsthand how cruel this game can be.

-2.5 points delta – that hurts not just statistically, but very really in the table. With 60 points, Madrid still leads the official table (tied at the top with 60 points, but that's another topic), but the 52.5 Expected Points show: Here's a team living dangerously beyond their means. A difference of 7.5 points between reality and expectation – that's quite a remarkable lucky streak that could be coming to an end.

Honest Table Situation: When Reality Meets Statistics

A look at both tables reveals the usual suspects – and a few remarkable outliers. FC Barcelona stands at the top both officially and by Expected Points, which is reassuring for all purists. The Catalans do have some fortune on their side with a 6.5-point luck advantage, but nowhere near as dramatically as others.

The absolute lucky charm of the season remains Villarreal CF: 51 real points, but only 27.5 Expected Points – a delta of incredible 23.5 points! In the honest table, they would be in 13th place instead of the Champions League spot at 3rd. That's not just luck, that's almost magic.

At the other end of the luck scale stands Athletic Club as the tragic hero: With 45 Expected Points, they would deserve 4th place, but only sit in 8th with 34 real points. A delta of -11 points – that's brutally unfair.

Outlook: The Laws of Statistics Strike Back

The next matchday will show whether the extremes level out again somewhat. Real Madrid will hardly have such bad luck permanently as the 2.49 xG against Celta suggests. On the other hand, Villarreal CF could slowly return to the ground of statistical reality – 23.5 points of luck advantage is simply not sustainable.

It will be particularly exciting for RC Celta de Vigo: Can they preserve their newfound luck or was the performance at the Bernabéu just a statistical outlier? The coming weeks will tell – the xG god never forgets, but sometimes he's merciful.
