The Andalusians turned their chance surplus into pure efficiency, while their opponents are left wondering how you can rack up 2.3 xG and still lose. FC Barcelona and Getafe CF also have reason to celebrate: both picked up three points from just one expected point – Barça thanks to a 5:0 thrashing at Elche CF that, xG-wise (1.37 to 0.90), was far closer than the scoreline suggests.

On the other end of the luck scale stands Athletic Club with a delta of -2.5 – unlucky devil number one of the matchday. 2.30 xG, zero points. That's not bad luck, that's practically comedy – just without the laughs. Deportivo Alavés (-1.5) and Racing Santander (-1.0) also have every right to feel hard done by: Racing Santander lost narrowly to Getafe CF despite their opponents' none-too-clinical finishing, while Alavés only took a point away at Rayo Vallecano despite xG numbers (1.57 to 0.97) that clearly argued for an away win.

The Honest Table

A look at both tables paints an intriguing picture. Sevilla FC officially lead with six points, but in the xP table the team would only rank third – three points above their true value, as the matchday report soberly notes.
