When Three Jerseys Wear a Horseshoe on Their Back at Once

Hook-Intro

Sometimes one glance at the delta column is enough to know that the football gods have gone on a triple-dispensing spree today. No fewer than three teams – Atlético de Madrid, Deportivo Alavés and Racing Santander – picked up all three points on Matchday 3 of La Liga, despite xG numbers that barely justified half a point. On the other end of the fairness scale sit Elche CF, Villarreal CF and Sevilla FC, who might well be wondering whether it's now legal in Spain to simply steal football matches. The honest table makes it clear: standing at the top doesn't necessarily mean you played like a top team.

Game of the Week

The biggest xG discrepancy of the round came, fittingly enough, in a fixture that promised a goal feast on paper: FC Barcelona against Rayo Vallecano finished 5:2 at Camp Nou, while the xG numbers (2.87 to 1.29) painted a much tighter picture. An xG diff of 1.58 is no small thing – Barça didn't just win here, they turned their finishing into a full-blown celebration. Scoring five goals from barely three expected ones is either class or sheer audacity. Probably both.

Close behind is the performance of Deportivo Alavés, who sent Villarreal CF home with a 1:0 defeat – on an xG ratio of 0.94 to 2.26. Villarreal created more than double the danger of their hosts and still walked away empty-handed. Welcome to the club of the unlucky – more on that shortly.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday

Three teams, one delta: +2.5 points above the expected value. Atlético de Madrid won 3:1 at Sevilla FC despite their own xG (1.2) sitting well below their hosts' (2.05). A win that, by rights, shouldn't really have been one on the pitch. Deportivo Alavés join the club with their narrow win over Villarreal, and Racing Santander rounds out the trio: a 3:2 win over Elche CF, in which the visitors were actually the technically superior side (xG 2.21 to 1.48).

The official table celebrates these three teams with a healthy points haul – the xP table politely reminds them that football is sometimes just a result-generating machine with little connection to what actually happened on the pitch.

xG Victims

On the losing side of chance, three candidates wait with an identical delta of -2.5. Elche CF played a match against Racing Santander that, according to xG (2.21 to 1.48), should have yielded an away win – instead it ended in a 2:3 defeat. Villarreal CF had to watch in Vitoria as their own attacking threat (2.26 xG) was punished by a single conceded goal. And Sevilla FC lost to Atlético despite the higher xG value – a defeat that, in the parallel universe of expected points, simply doesn't exist.

Particularly bitter for Elche: with an xP of 4.5, the team would actually be on course for the playoffs, yet in the real table they sit stranded on just one point in 20th place. That's not bad luck – that's chance declaring footballing bankruptcy.

The Honest Table

A look at both tables reveals some lovely shifts. FC Barcelona officially lead with nine points and a three-point cushion over their own xP – a stockpile of luck that will eventually come due. Real Madrid, by contrast, sit at or near the top of both tables, with a much smaller delta of just 1.5 – solid rather than spectacularly convincing.

Things get really interesting in midtable: Athletic Club officially sit in only 12th place, but rank 5th in the xP table – a team clearly playing better football than their points suggest. A similar picture emerges for Villarreal (officially 15th, xP rank 8) and the aforementioned Elche (officially 20th, xP rank 9). These three teams are right to feel hard done by. CA Osasuna, meanwhile, sit in 5th in the real table – noticeably better off than their performance would suggest (xP rank 6, though closer to reality here) – though the gap is at least manageable in this case.

Outlook

The season is still young, but the patterns are already unmistakable: teams like Athletic Club or Villarreal, who impress on the pitch yet keep leaving points behind, will eventually get their due – that's simply how regression to the mean works. Conversely, the lucky charms Atlético, Alavés and Racing should expect a correction unless they start matching their xG numbers to their results soon. FC Barcelona can afford their cushion as long as the goals keep flowing the way they did on Matchday 3 – but the honest table will keep watching. Matchday 4 will show whether chance is about to present the bill.
