When the Calculator Sounds the Alarm Twice in Valencia
Hook Intro
There are matchdays when the table makes sense. And then there's Matchday 6 in La Liga, where two teams from Valencia show just how far results and performance can drift apart – only in opposite directions. While FC Barcelona stage a goal-fest at Camp Nou with a 7-2 win (fully deserved even by xG standards!), elsewhere teams are fighting against the cold hard numbers. Welcome to the honest table, where Lady Luck is pulling a double shift in Valencia today.
Game of the Week
The biggest xG discrepancy of the matchday comes, fittingly, from the top clash in Barcelona: FC Barcelona steamroll Racing Santander 7-2, with an xG of 3.13 to 0.6. A gap of 2.53 – and yet the result here wasn't a surprise at all, more a confirmation of brutal superiority. More intriguing is the case of Atlético de Madrid against CA Osasuna: 4-0, with an xG of 2.88 to 0.43. Here too the favorite dominated both on the scoreboard and in chances created – a rare case of harmony between result and xG truth this weekend.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday
Two teams share the crown for biggest lucky escape this week: Valencia CF and Rayo Vallecano, both with a delta of +2.5. Valencia CF won away at Deportivo Alavés 1-0 – with an xG of just 1.06 against 1.59. Less possession, fewer chances, but three points in the bag. Rayo Vallecano beat RCD Espanyol 2-1, even though the visitors actually played the better game according to xG (1.89 to 1.37). Not far behind: Levante UD, who beat Athletic Club 3-1 despite the Bilbao side being the dominant team by xG (2.0 to 1.52). Three wins that, per the xP model, should really have been draws or losses – Valencia, Rayo and Levante owe the football gods a thank-you note.
xG Victims
On the flip side stand two unlucky souls, both with an identical delta of -2.5: RCD Espanyol and Deportivo Alavés. Espanyol produced an xG of 1.89 away at Rayo Vallecano but came away empty-handed with a 1-2 loss. Alavés, meanwhile, racked up a solid xG of 1.59 against Valencia CF but lost 0-1 – not even a consolation point to show for it. Real Sociedad also joins the club with a delta of -1.5: their 0-0 draw against RC Celta de Vigo, with an xG of 1.7 to 1.03, should really have brought three points. Instead, they got just one – and a shirt to cry into.
The Honest Table
The top stays stable: FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid lead both the official and the xP table, though Barcelona's 7.5-point cushion over their own xP tally shows that momentum is very much playing a role right now. Things get more interesting further down: Real Betis sit fourth officially, but only seventh by xP – 5.5 points above their deserved standing. Even more extreme is the case of Villarreal CF: officially only 12th, but by xP the clear number 4 in the league! With a deficit of 7 points, Villarreal are the biggest victims of randomness this season. Deportivo Alavés (8th officially, 5th by xP) and Athletic Club (13th vs. 8th) must also be wondering when their luck will finally turn. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, sit pretty in 5th place officially, while by xP they'd only deserve 13th – a whopping 6-point difference in their favor.
Outlook
The numbers are practically screaming for a correction: Villarreal CF can't stay stuck on just 9 points forever with performances like these – sooner or later the quality has to show up in the table. The same goes for Deportivo Alavés and Athletic Club, both clearly better sides than their table position suggests. On the other side, Real Sociedad, Valencia CF, Rayo Vallecano and Levante UD risk a crash landing if the Expected Goals model finally has its say. Next matchday will show whether the honest table gets its revenge – or whether Lady Luck has simply renewed her season ticket in Spain.
