When Elche Robs the Lottery Office and Espanyol Stands There Empty-Handed
A Matchday That Turns Truth on Its Head
Ten games, ten small miracles, so it felt – and a glance at the xG numbers confirms it: Matchday 7 of La Liga was a feast for anyone who believes in football gods, and pure agony for anyone who believes in football logic. While FC Barcelona top the official table, in the honest world it's none other than Real Madrid sitting at the summit – despite losing in Madrid. Welcome to the parallel universe of Expected Points.
Match of the Week: Bilbao Dominates, Bilbao Gets Nothing
The biggest xG discrepancy of the round comes, fittingly, from a 0:0. Athletic Club practically took Deportivo Alavés apart at San Mamés Barria – 2.20 xG against a paltry 0.19 xG, a difference of 2.01. Yet at the final whistle, not a single number appeared on the scoreboard. A result so unjust you could almost feel sorry for your own statistics. Alavés defended like a fortress and walked away with a point that probability theory never wanted to hand over.
Lucky Devil of the Week: Elche Raids the Lottery Office
Anyone who believes quality is all that matters in football should take a closer look at Elche CF's game. Away at RCD Espanyol, the visitors won 3:1 – with an xG value of just 1.18 against the hosts' 2.40. That makes for a delta of a whopping +2.5 between match-day points and Expected Points. Three points for a performance that, statistically, barely deserved half a point. Elche hits the jackpot while the competition can only watch in disbelief.
Real Sociedad and RC Celta de Vigo also get to enjoy their weekend haul with a delta of +2. Celta's 5:0 thrashing of Racing Santander looked like a gala performance, but according to xG (1.79 to 1.37) it was a much tighter affair than the scoreline suggests.
xG Victim: Espanyol Loses the Match It Should Have Won
And then there's RCD Espanyol – the biggest unlucky team of the round. An xG value of 2.40 on home turf, a 1:3 defeat, zero points where statistically 2.5 were expected. Delta: -2.5. An afternoon at the RCDE Stadium that felt like a heist on their own fanbase.
Rayo Vallecano and the aforementioned Athletic Club didn't fare much better – both with a delta of -1.5. Osasuna and Rayo shared the points in a 1:1 draw, but the numbers say Rayo, with 1.63 xG against Osasuna's 1.08 xG, should really have been the clear favourite for three points.
The Honest Table: Real Madrid Are the Secret Boss
The official table is topped by FC Barcelona with 21 points, a comfortable 6.5 points above their xP value of 14.5 – Catalonia is currently living beyond its means, sportingly speaking. In the honest table, however, it's Real Madrid sitting on top with 15.5 xP, despite "only" 15 points on paper. A team that, performance-wise, has deserved more than the results have delivered so far.
Things get even more interesting at the bottom of the table of truth: Villarreal CF are the biggest losers of the round, with a delta of -4.5 the most conspicuously "underperforming" club in the entire league – 12.5 xP stand against just 8 real points. On the flip side, Deportivo La Coruña have a tidy +2.5 delta cushion, even if the club "only" lands in 14th place in the xP table.
Athletic Club (9th officially, but 7th in xP) and RCD Espanyol (15th officially, 9th in xP!) also show: anyone who only looks at the table isn't seeing the full truth.
Outlook: Will the Statistics Have the Last Word?
38 matchdays are a long road, and football history teaches us that over time, results tables and xP tables usually converge. Villarreal and Espanyol can therefore breathe a little easier – their performances should eventually pay off, provided the football gods don't keep looking the other way forever. Elche and Real Sociedad, on the other hand, should brace themselves: those who accumulate points beyond their means eventually have to pay the bill. The next matchday will show whether the outliers start normalising – or whether La Liga simply keeps making fools of us all.
