Real Sociedad Raids the Treasury, Deportivo La Coruña Left Empty-Handed
Hook-Intro
Sometimes you have to wonder if the football gods simply took the weekend off and left the distribution of points to an intern with a dice cup. Matchday 8 of La Liga once again delivered proof: xG and the real table live in two different universes, and between them lies at least one dimension full of bad luck, good luck, and Spanish drama. While FC Barcelona continues to cement its role as favourite with aplomb, other clubs are wrestling with the bitter realisation that playing good football alone simply doesn't guarantee points. A reminder: not all matches of the round have been played yet, with one fixture still outstanding — but there's still plenty of material for an honest assessment.
Game of the Week
The crown for the most absurd number game this round clearly goes to Barcelona itself — no, not because of FC Barcelona's match against Getafe CF, even though that one, with an xG difference of 2.0 (2.52 to 0.52), was no surprise either. The real statistical scandal of the matchday unfolded in Vitoria-Gasteiz: Deportivo Alavés managed only 0.9 xG at home at the Estadio de Mendizorroza against Atlético de Madrid, yet still had to leave the pitch with a 1:2 defeat — against an opponent who, with 2.39 xG, was simply the better team. Not exactly surprising, then, but a textbook lesson in how Atlético ruthlessly finishes its chances while the underdog once again comes up short. More entertaining was the offensive fireworks between Levante UD and Sevilla FC: a 3:3 draw at a tally of 2.15 to 1.76 xG — a match that definitely gave the fans at the Playa de Valencia their money's worth.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday
The trophy for the week's most shameless lottery win goes to Real Sociedad. With just 0.5 expected points against Deportivo La Coruña, the team from San Sebastián strolled away from Anoeta with all three points — a delta of a whopping +2.5. With an xG of 1.26 against 2.35 for the opponent, one would have expected a thrashing in Donostia; instead, it finished 3:2. Right behind them comes Real Madrid: with just 1.0 xP against Villarreal CF, they still snuck away with the full haul of points — a win that had more to do with keeping a clean sheet than with offensive dominance (1.37 to 1.59 xG). The Royals, it seems, know how to get home even without the better expected-goals number.
xG Victim
Meanwhile, the club left to stare bitterly into its glass this week was Deportivo La Coruña. With a strong 2.35 xG away in San Sebastián, the team really earned at least a point, perhaps even the win — instead, they came away with a goose egg on the points side: 0 real points against 2.5 expected points, a delta of -2.5. That's bad luck in its purest form. Málaga CF and Elche CF also have every right to feel hard done by: both racked up 2.5 xP but each only took home a measly single point. Especially bitter for Elche CF: the 0:0 stalemate against RC Celta de Vigo (1.29 to 0.67 xG) really deserved three points — instead, only a shared point remained.
The Honest Table
A look at the xP table makes one thing clear right away: the top of the table with FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, and Real Madrid holds up even under honest accounting — these three teams dominate deservedly. Things get really interesting further down: Villarreal CF, currently only tenth with 12 points, should actually be sitting in 3rd place according to xP — with a delta of -6.5, by far the biggest unlucky soul of the season so far. Deportivo Alavés (-5.5) and Athletic Club (-3.5) are hit almost as badly, both ranking well below their statistical potential. On the flip side of the coin sits Real Sociedad: officially fifth with 19 points, but according to xP really only mid-table material with 12.5 points at home — a delta of +6.5 speaks volumes. Real Betis (+5.5) and FC Barcelona itself (+5) are also feeding off more luck than the raw numbers would suggest.
Outlook
With Villarreal CF, Deportivo Alavés, and Athletic Club as the season's biggest unlucky clubs so far, the question arises: when will the tide turn? Statistically speaking, sooner or later a run of wins should correct this underperformance — after all, xG numbers don't lie forever. For Real Sociedad and Real Madrid, on the other hand, the rule applies: anyone who regularly collects more points than their opponent despite lower xG will eventually need a stretch where the normal distribution strikes back. FC Barcelona, meanwhile, remains the only club where appearance and reality are almost perfectly aligned — which makes the Catalans this season's number one bogey team, with absolutely no statistical excuses needed.
