Vigo gewinnt im Casino, Alavés verliert die Jacke an der Garderobe

Hook-Intro

There are matchdays when the xG stats explain the world, and there are matchdays like this 9th round of La Liga, where they just shrug in resignation. Ten matches, ten little dramas – and at the end, a table that bears only a distant relation to the reality of chance conversion. FC Barcelona sits on top, entirely deservedly, but below them the great chaos begins. Welcome to the honest truth behind the results.

Game of the Week

The award goes to a match that looks on paper like a modest 2-1, but was in truth a statistical earthquake: RC Celta de Vigo against Deportivo Alavés at Balaídos. Alavés racked up xG values of 2.32 – more than three times as much as the hosts' meagre 0.77. The xG difference of 1.55 is the second-highest of the entire matchday. And yet: Celta win 2-1, Alavés go home with nothing. A lesson in how little chance superiority sometimes counts when the ball simply refuses to go in.

Close behind: Villarreal CF against Elche CF, a 0-0 that, according to the xG numbers (2.26 to 0.68), should really have been a Villarreal shooting gallery. Instead: nothing, nada, no points for the dominant side.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday

RC Celta de Vigo is the shining winner of the week. Three points from an expected value of just 0.5 xP – a delta of +2.5. That's not football, that's defensive harakiri with a happy ending. Close behind are Real Madrid (3 points from 1.0 xP) and Real Sociedad (also 3 from 1.0 xP), who treated themselves to more luck than control during their 5-2 thrashing in Málaga. Three teams, one common denominator: they won the lottery this weekend without buying a ticket.

xG Victims

On the other side of the coin: Deportivo Alavés. Zero points from 2.5 expected points – a delta of -2.5, the worst figure of the matchday. Anyone who goes home with over two expected points and empty hands has every right to feel hard done by. Villarreal CF (1 point from 2.5 xP) and Rayo Vallecano (1 point from 2.5 xP) also earn a spot in the ranks of the unlucky. Three teams who impressed on the pitch and were punished in the table.

The Honest League Table

The top stays stable: FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, and Real Madrid lead both the official and the xP table – no need to sugarcoat it, these three are simply good. Things get interesting from fourth place onward. Real Betis sit officially in 4th, but only 7th by xP – a diff of +5.5, the biggest positive value among the top teams.

Even more extreme: Villarreal CF. Officially only 12th in the table with a measly 9 points, but by xP the league's number 4 with a hefty 16 expected points. A diff of -7 – the biggest outlier of the entire matchday and rightfully the "biggest loser" of the week. Deportivo Alavés (-4) and Athletic Club (-3) are also playing noticeably better than their table position suggests.

On the flip side: Real Sociedad shine officially in 5th place but drop back to 13th in the xP table (diff +6) – the biggest positive outlier of the matchday. Anyone wanting to get closer to true form should consult this table more often than the official one.

Outlook

With Barcelona seemingly untouchable at the top, the most exciting question remains how much longer teams like Real Betis and Real Sociedad can stretch their lucky streak before the xG stats present the bill. Villarreal CF, meanwhile, continue waiting for the day their dominance finally gets paid out in points – and Deportivo Alavés might well wonder how many more chances they'll have to waste before their luck finally turns. Matchday 10 will show whether reality is starting to set in – or whether the grand game of confusion simply continues.
