Matchday 21: When Even City Can't Find the Net
The Triumph of the Impossible Over the Logical
Sometimes football plays by its own rules – and these have little to do with Expected Goals. On Matchday 21 of the Premier League, the impossible triumphed over the logical, luck over statistics. While Manchester City only managed a 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Etihad Stadium despite having three times as many big chances, AFC Bournemouth beat Tottenham 3-2 at the Vitality Stadium even though Spurs created the better scoring opportunities. Welcome to the wonderful world of the Premier League, where xG values are sometimes just printed paper.
Game of the Week: Burnley Makes Life Difficult for United
The match of the matchday took place at Turf Moor, where Burnley FC held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw – a result that appears fair at first glance but tells a story of missed chances upon closer inspection. With an xG value of 2.97 to 0.73, the Red Devils should have won this game comfortably. Instead, they were caught off guard by a Burnley side that inflicted maximum damage from minimal chances.
For United, it was further proof that they cannot convert their dominance into goals – a problem that has haunted them all season. For Burnley FC, however, it was a gift from the football gods, who sometimes love an underdog story too.
Lucky Winner of the Matchday: Bournemouth Rob Spurs Blind
AFC Bournemouth can celebrate themselves as the biggest lucky winners of the matchday. With an Expected Points haul of just 0.5 points, they snatched three full points against Tottenham Hotspur – a delta of a whopping 2.5 points in the Cherries' favor.
At the Vitality Stadium, Spurs showed the better performance with 1.66 xG compared to 1.15 xG, but still lost 2-3. For AFC Bournemouth, it was a perfect example of how to make the most of few chances. The statisticians will shake their heads, the fans from the south coast won't care – three points are three points, regardless of how they come about.
xG Victim: Tottenham and the Eternal Bad Luck Streak
If there's one club that could complain to Expected Goals, it's Tottenham Hotspur. With 0 points from a game where they should have taken 2.5 Expected Points, they were the biggest hard-luck story of the matchday. A delta of -2.5 points hurts – especially considering that Spurs would already be standing three places higher in the honest table anyway.
The North Londoners showed a decent performance in Bournemouth but were caught cold by their hosts' efficiency. It's a pattern that runs through their entire season: good approaches that go unrewarded. In the xP table, they sit in 12th place with 32.5 Expected Points but have only collected 29 points in reality.
Honest League Table: Villa Lives Off Luck, Wolves Off Bad Luck
The honest table after 21 games reveals some remarkable discrepancies. While Arsenal FC leads both the official and xP tables, a different picture emerges behind them: Aston Villa officially sits in third place but only belongs in eighth according to Expected Points. With a luck delta of 16.5 points, they are the season's biggest beneficiaries.
At the other end of the scale, Wolverhampton Wanderers suffer from unprecedented bad luck: With 28 Expected Points, they stand in 17th place in the honest table but in reality occupy last place with only 10 points – a delta of -18 points that's almost dramatic.
Manchester City would only be in second place in a fair world instead of maintaining their current position, while Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest should be doing much better than their real positions suggest.
Outlook: The Table Seeks Its Balance
With 17 matchdays still to go, it remains to be seen whether the large discrepancies between the real and honest tables will persist or gradually align. Aston Villa will have to learn that luck is a temporary commodity, while Wolverhampton Wanderers can hope that their strong performance values will eventually translate into points.
It will be exciting at the top: Arsenal FC leads both tables, but the lead in the honest table is more comfortable. Manchester City, meanwhile, currently benefits from a decent luck cushion – the question is just how long that will last. The next matchday will write new stories again, produce new lucky winners and unlucky losers. In a league where Expected Goals are sometimes just theory, the only thing to expect is the unexpected.
