Fortune, Misfortune, and an 18-Point Miracle: The Premier League Reality Check

The Chaos of Probabilities

Matchday 7 of the 2025/26 Premier League season was a prime example of why football is the world's most beautiful game – and simultaneously the most frustrating for all stat nerds. While the lucky ones are rubbing their hands together, the unlucky are staring desperately at their xG values wondering what they've done to offend the football gods.

Game of the Week: Brighton at Molineux Stadium

The most dramatic match of the matchday took place at Molineux Stadium, where Brighton & Hove Albion faced off against Wolverhampton Wanderers. With an xG difference of 1.16 in favour of the Seagulls, the game should have been clear-cut – Brighton shot their hearts out (1.95 xG) but still had to settle for a 1:1 draw. Wolves, on the other hand, created just 0.79 xG and picked up a point they didn't really deserve according to the numbers. But Brighton can certainly relate: in the honest table they sit in 7th place, while in reality they're languishing down in 14th.

Lucky Charms of the Matchday: The Fortunate Trio

Three teams share the dubious title of matchday's luckiest: FC Everton, FC Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur each picked up three points despite their xP values only suggesting one point. A delta of 2 points each – that's quite remarkable! FC Everton beat Crystal Palace 2:1, even though the Eagles actually created slightly better chances with 1.84 xG compared to the Toffees' 1.74 xG. Sometimes football just isn't a maths lesson after all.

xG Victims: Brighton Pays the Price

Brighton & Hove Albion tops our misfortune rankings with a delta of -1.5 points. The Seagulls should have deserved at least two points based on their 2.5 Expected Points, but went home with just a measly single point. This is particularly bitter because Brighton would sit in a respectable 7th place in the honest table – seven positions higher than in reality! The football gods really don't seem to be smiling on Brighton this year.

Honest Table Standings: The Great Redistribution

The discrepancy between the official and honest tables is particularly stark this year. Aston Villa are the absolute fortune kings of the season: 16.5 points more than their xP values suggest! Sitting 3rd in the official table, they would only be 8th in the honest league. Manchester City also benefits handsomely from football karma with 8.5 luck points.

At the other end of the spectrum lies a tragedy of epic proportions: Wolverhampton Wanderers have an incredible 18 points fewer than their Expected Points! With just 10 points, they're vegetating in last place, even though their xP values of 28 points would put them in a safe mid-table position. You rarely see anything like this – Wolves are the living example that football is sometimes simply unfair.

Outlook: Regression Awaits

This season's extreme discrepancies can't last forever. The laws of probability are patient, but they eventually claim back what belongs to them. Aston Villa will sooner or later have to pay for their lucky streak, while Brighton and especially Wolverhampton Wanderers can hope for better times.

The big question is: when will the turning point come? By mid-season at the latest, the tables should start to align – until then, we'll continue to witness what's probably the craziest Premier League season in ages. For the lucky ones, the message is: enjoy it while it lasts. For the unlucky: hang in there, the statistics are on your side!
