Serie A Matchday 19: When Luck is Unfairly Distributed

When xG Dreams Burst

There are matchdays where you just shake your head and wonder if the football god has gone on vacation. Serie A's 19th matchday was a prime example of how brutal the difference between deserved and actual results can be. While some teams converted their few chances with the efficiency of a Swiss watch, others gnashed their teeth against goalkeepers who must have made a pact with the devil.

Game of the Week: AC Milan vs. Genoa CFC – A Masterclass in Inefficiency

At the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, we witnessed the perfect example of the difference between statistics and reality. AC Milan dominated Genoa CFC by every rule in the book, hammering 3.36 xG at the visitors' goal – and were punished in the end with a measly 1:1. With an xG difference of 2.66 in favor of the Rossoneri, this was the most frustrating draw of the matchday.

The Milanese failed against everything a goalkeeper has to offer: reflexes, luck, and presumably a bit of black magic too. While Genoa with 0.7 xG barely had enough chances to justify a point, it was enough in the end for a completely undeserved point. That's Serie A, baby – where dreams die and xG consultants become unemployed.

Lucky Winner of the Matchday: Three Teams Share the Jackpot Crown

Three teams can celebrate undeserved moments of luck: Udinese Calcio, Atalanta, and AS Roma each cream off 2 points more than their xP values suggest. Particularly spicy: Udinese won 2:1 at Torino FC, even though the Expected Points rather suggested a draw. The visitors from Udine once again prove that efficiency is sometimes more important than dominance – a lesson for all xG purists out there.

AS Roma used their away fixture at US Lecce for a solid 2:0 victory and also collected two bonus points. At Roma, things are currently running like clockwork: deserved victories are garnished with a bit of extra luck.

The xG Victim: Three Unlucky Teams Must Suffer

The matchday had three big losers when it comes to luck: SS Lazio, Cagliari Calcio, and AC Milan each collected 1.5 points fewer than they deserved based on their performance.

SS Lazio was particularly annoyed, as the 2:2 against ACF Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico felt more like a missed victory according to the xG values (2.06 to 1.09 for Lazio). Cagliari Calcio also cursed their fate: In the 2:2 against US Cremonese, the visitors were the better team xG-wise (2.1 to 1.34), but had to settle for one point.

The Honest League Table: A League of Extremes

The official table shows Inter Milan confidently at the top, but the xP table reveals a different story. AC Milan may officially sit in 2nd place with 54 points, but according to xP logic should be in 6th place with only 39.5 points – a massive difference of 14.5 points!

But the absolute drama is playing out at the other end: AC Pisa is languishing with only 15 points in 19th place, even though 26.5 xP would mean a respectable 15th place. This 11.5-point difference is absolute madness and shows how cruel the football god can sometimes be.

Meanwhile, US Sassuolo is living the dream of all lucky teams: With 35 points they sit in 9th place, even though their xP balance of only 25 points would actually mean 19th place. That's 10 points of pure luck – respect!

Outlook: Luck is a Fickle Bird

What does this crazy 19th matchday teach us? That football isn't purely an xG game after all, but a sport where goals count in the end, not probabilities. But beware: luck is a fickle thing, and whoever relies too heavily on it will sooner or later be caught by reality.

AC Milan shouldn't worry – with 3.36 xG against Genoa, such chances are normally converted. US Sassuolo, however, would do well to improve their efficiency before the house of cards collapses. And AC Pisa? They can only hope that their bad luck turns soon – with 26.5 xP, they're definitely better than their league position suggests.

The next matchday will show whether the wheat separates from the chaff or whether the great game of chance continues. In Serie A, everything is famously possible – especially the impossible.
