Serie A Matchday 20: When cannons fall silent and lucky devils celebrate
The tale of small differences
While AC Milan continues to weave its magic through Serie A (14.5 points above xP value!), we experienced a round full of surprising twists on matchday 20. From Juventus finally converting their chances to three teams who collected maximum points with minimal Expected Points effort – Italia shows us once again why football is the most beautiful lottery in the world.
Match of the Week: Genoa vs. Cagliari - When the universe takes the helm
At Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, we witnessed the perfect example of why Expected Goals are sometimes just statistics. Genoa CFC beat Cagliari Calcio 3-0, despite Expected Goals being virtually identical (1.4 vs. 1.45). A difference of a paltry 0.05 xG, but a result that couldn't have been clearer.
While Cagliari is probably wondering what they did to anger the football gods, Genoa celebrates an efficiency that would make even German engineers jealous. Three goals from 1.4 Expected Goals? That's a conversion rate Amazon salespeople can only dream of.
Lucky devil of the matchday: The triumvirate of fortune
Three teams share the title of lucky devil: alongside the already mentioned Genoa CFC, SS Lazio and Parma Calcio joined the party. All three collected three points each, despite their Expected Points sitting at a modest one point – a delta of +2.
SS Lazio beat Hellas Verona FC 1-0 at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, despite both teams generating exactly 1.08 xG. A perfect xG stalemate, but the Romans obviously had better timing – or simply a better connection to Italian football's luck merchant.
Parma Calcio, meanwhile, won away at US Lecce 2-1, despite Expected Goals slightly favoring the hosts (0.92 vs. 1.28). Sometimes it's enough to be in the right place at the right time – and do it twice.
xG victims: The trio of the disappointed
On the other side of the luck spectrum, we find three teams who collected just one point each, despite their Expected Points sitting at 2.5: AC Pisa, Como 1907 and ACF Fiorentina.
Particularly bitter for Fiorentina: at Stadio Artemio Franchi, they drew 1-1 with AC Milan, despite creating significantly more chances with 2.14 xG compared to the Milanese (1.29 xG). But when you're already 9 points below your xP value for the season, that's probably just the fate of an unlucky soul.
AC Pisa suffered similarly at Udinese: 2-2 despite 1.68 Expected Goals against just 1.13 for the hosts. With -11.5 points difference to their Expected Points value, they're the absolute unlucky charm of the season.
Honest table position: Milan's fairytale hour continues
The table situation continues to reveal the Italian paradox: while Inter Milan sits at the top both in reality and by xP, there's a gap between dreams and reality behind them.
AC Milan sits in 2nd place with 54 points, but would be in 6th with only 39.5 points according to Expected Points. That's a 14.5-point luck advantage – a value that would exceed even the wildest dreams of lottery players.
On the flip side, ACF Fiorentina languishes in 16th place with just 24 points, despite standing in the secure midfield with 33 points according to xP. The -9 point difference shows: sometimes luck simply isn't home when you come knocking.
Juventus FC, however, stands almost exactly where they should according to Expected Points – a rare case of statistical honesty in this league of extremes.
Outlook: The wheel of fortune keeps spinning
With 18 matchdays still ahead, the question remains: can AC Milan continue their fairytale ride, or will the reality of Expected Points catch up with them? And will unlucky souls like Pisa and Fiorentina finally reap the fruits of their good work?
One thing is certain: in a league where an xG difference of 0.05 leads to a 3-0 victory and teams with identical Expected Goals achieve completely different results, anything is possible. This doesn't make Serie A any less exciting – it shows us why we sit in front of our screens anew every matchday.
The honest table tells us the truth about performance, but in the end, only the points in the real account matter. And there, luck clearly reigns supreme this season – at least for some.
