Matchday 7 in Serie A: The Great Frustration at Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris
When xG Cries: Genoa's Tragic Hero and Como's Perfect Timing
On the seventh matchday of Serie A 2025/26, the football god Fortune was standing on his head once again: While some could celebrate despite poor performances, others stood there with glittering xG values and empty hands. The best example? Genoa CFC at Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris – a tragedy in red and blue.
Match of the Week: Genoa vs. Parma – When 2.32 xG Runs into the Void
The 0-0 between Genoa CFC and Parma Calcio was statistically as one-sided as a boxing match between Mike Tyson and a toddler. With 2.32 Expected Goals against 0.19, Genoa dominated the game so thoroughly that even neutral observers felt pity. The xG difference of 2.13 was the highest of the entire matchday – and yet both teams went home with one point.
While Genoa CFC squandered chance after chance, Parma Calcio defended like the Spartans at Thermopylae. The result: A draw that should look completely different in the honest table. With normal chance conversion, Genoa would have easily bagged three points, while Parma can be glad they took home any point at all.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday: Torino FC – How to Achieve More with Less
Torino FC shows us at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino what Italian efficiency looks like: With a measly 1.18 xG against SSC Napoli's 2.26, the Granata still win 1-0. A delta of +2.5 points between actual result and Expected Points – that's almost indecent.
While SSC Napoli fired everything at goal that wasn't nailed down, one well-taken opportunity was enough for Torino. Football can be so beautifully unfair – at least when you're on the right side.
xG Victim: SSC Napoli – The South Weeps
The other side of the coin shows us SSC Napoli: With 2.26 xG, the Partenopei should actually have earned 2.5 Expected Points, but went home with zero points. A delta of -2.5 – bitter as a Neapolitan espresso without sugar.
This is football at its cruelest: You play well, create chances on the assembly line and still leave as the loser. The honest table would see Napoli much higher – but unfortunately games aren't decided on paper.
Honest League Table: The Great Deceptions
In the official table, Inter Milan leads sovereignly with 64 points, and this is also justified in the xP table – the Nerazzurri have earned their top position, even if they're slightly overperforming with a 5-point luck advantage.
However, the true beneficiaries of luck are AC Milan (14.5 points above xP value) and SSC Napoli (10.5 points luck advantage). While Milan sits on 2nd place with 54 points, they would only be in 6th place in the honest table – a massive difference.
On the other side, ACF Fiorentina becomes the league's biggest xG martyr with -9 points. With 33 Expected Points, the Viola should actually be standing much higher than their disappointing 16th place. Even more dramatic is the fate of AC Pisa (-11.5) and Hellas Verona FC (-10.5) – both teams are playing significantly better than their table position suggests.
Outlook: The Truth Always Comes to Light
Mathematics knows no mercy: Over the distance of an entire season, luck and misfortune usually balance out. Teams like AC Milan and SSC Napoli, who currently stand far above their xP values, should wrap up warm – regression to the mean is definitely coming.
Conversely, ACF Fiorentina, AC Pisa and Hellas Verona FC can have hope: Those who consistently produce good xG values will sooner or later collect the corresponding points. The honest table shows us who is really strong – and sometimes the truth is more surprising than reality.
The eighth matchday will show whether the lucky devils continue flying or whether the xG statistics finally find their deserved reward. One thing is certain: Serie A is always good for a surprise – regardless of what the Expected Goals say.
