Genoa Steal the Points, Juve Pick Up the Bill in the Seaside Casino
Hook-Intro
There are matchdays when Serie A is simply Serie A: loud, chaotic, and utterly immune to advice from statistical models. Matchday 9 was one of those occasions. While Sassuolo conceded six goals on a measly 0.8 xG and Lazio didn't bother justifying their result, drama of a different kind unfolded elsewhere: Genoa won a match that, according to xG, they really should have lost – and Juventus lost one they really should have won. Welcome to the honest part of the table, where the numbers don't lie, even if the scoreline does.
Game of the Week
The biggest xG discrepancy of the matchday, fittingly, comes from a 0-0 draw. Parma Calcio against Udinese Calcio at the Stadio Ennio Tardini ended goalless – but while Parma barely stirred with a tired 0.92 xG, Udinese Calcio racked up a proud 1.98 xG and still walked away empty-handed. A difference of 1.06 xG that ultimately translated into precisely zero goals. This is the kind of footballing irony that keeps statisticians up at night: the better performance didn't earn a single point more than the worse one. Udinese Calcio are well within their rights to wonder what exactly it takes to win this game – apparently dominance alone just doesn't cut it.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday
The crown for this matchday goes to Genoa CFC. At home at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, they beat Juventus FC 2-0 – on a modest xG of 1.35 against the visitors' strong 1.89. That's a whopping delta of +2.5 between the three points actually banked and the 0.5 expected points. This isn't football, this is kamikaze efficiency. SSC Napoli and Inter Milan line up right behind with a delta of +2.0 each – they too took home more than their own performance really warranted this weekend. The Italian football gods apparently had an especially generous hand for the coastal cities this round.
xG Victims
On the other end of the luck scale stands Juventus FC, pretty much alone. 0 points from 2.5 expected points – a delta of -2.5 that stings. The Old Lady created plenty in Genoa to win comfortably, yet took nothing home. Udinese Calcio (-1.5) and ACF Fiorentina (-1.5) also have every right to feel hard done by. The latter, in their 2-2 draw against Atalanta, only picked up a single point despite outperforming their opponents 2.4 xG to 1.27 – at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, the result really should have gone the home side's way.
The Honest Table
If you look at the official standings, SS Lazio sit right at the top – with 25 points from just 14 expected points. A difference of +11! That's not a league lead anymore, that's a championship-winning performance at the carnival coconut shy. In the xP table, however, Lazio only rank 6th, overtaken by Inter Milan (19.5 xP), Como 1907 (19.5 xP), AS Roma (17.5 xP), and even Juventus FC (17.5 xP despite a miserable 14 real points and 8th place in the table). Particularly bitter: ACF Fiorentina officially sit 19th with just 5 points, but according to xP they'd rank 7th with 14 points – a difference of a staggering 9 points. Equally tragic: Venezia, currently rock bottom with 3 points, would already have 12 points by xP and would be sitting comfortably in midtable. Two genuine unlucky souls of the season so far, who'd look very different in the "honest" world.
Outlook
The big question heading into the next matchday: will Lazio's lucky streak ever run out? With a points cushion of +11 over their xP value, a regression to the mean is well overdue. Juventus FC, too, will be wondering when their finishing will finally start matching their performance level – currently reality and expectation are separated by 3.5 points in the wrong direction. And Venezia and Fiorentina have every reason to hope: teams producing this much xG can't carry a bad-luck streak forever. The relegation zone could be in for a real surprise over the coming weeks – at least if the stats end up having the final word after all.
