Matchday 12: When Football Gods Play Dice

The Miracle of Lucerne and Other Statistical Anomalies

Matchday 12 of the Super League couldn't have been crazier – it was as if the football gods had decided to play dice and threw all the laws of Expected Goals overboard in the process. While statistical miracles occurred at the Stockhorn Arena and Stadion Schützenwiese, other teams had to learn painfully that good chances are far from a guarantee for points.

Game of the Week: Winterthur's Great Heist at Home

With an xG discrepancy of a staggering 1.22, FC Winterthur delivered the statistically most impossible result of the matchday against Servette FC. Winterthur won 4:2 at home, even though the visitors were clearly the better team with 2.35 to 1.13 Expected Goals. That's like winning at poker with two sevens against a full house – theoretically possible, but a small miracle in reality. Servette FC must be wondering what they did to the football gods to be punished so severely.

Lucky Winner of the Matchday: Thun and Winterthur Share the Jackpot

Two teams hit the jackpot on Matchday 12: Both FC Thun and FC Winterthur turned Expected Points of just 0.5 into full three points – a delta of 2.5 that's statistically about as likely as winning the lottery. FC Thun won 2:1 against FC Sion at the Stockhorn Arena, even though the Valaisans had the clearer chances with 2.2 to 1.55 Expected Goals. We've already acknowledged Winterthur's cavalry charge – both teams impressively prove that efficiency is sometimes more important than dominance.

xG Victim of the Matchday: Servette and Sion – When Bad Luck Comes in Pairs

With -2.5 each in the delta between actual points and Expected Points, Servette FC and FC Sion are the big unlucky ones of the matchday. Both should have statistically deserved 2.5 points but came away empty-handed. Particularly bitter for Servette: With 2.35 Expected Goals in Winterthur, they were clearly the better team but suffered a 2:4 defeat. FC Sion, meanwhile, dominated FC Thun with 2.2 to 1.55 xG but still lost 1:2. Sometimes football just isn't a concert of wishes after all.

Honest League Table: The Great Distortion Continues to Grow

A look at our honest table reveals continuing drastic differences from the official standings. FC Thun sits at the top both officially and in the xP table, but with a 16.5-point lead over their Expected Points, they're the big winners of the league lottery. Even more extreme: FC Lugano officially stands in 3rd place with 46 points but would be relegated to last place according to Expected Points with only 24.5 points – a staggering difference of 21.5 points!

At the other end of the luck scale, FC Lausanne-Sport and Servette FC are suffering: Both are doing significantly worse than their performances would deserve. Lausanne would be second instead of ninth in the honest table, Servette fourth instead of tenth. That's pure football frustration in its purest form.

Outlook: Will Luck Be Redistributed?

After a matchday full of statistical anomalies, the question arises: Can Thun and Lugano continue to preserve their luck, or will the pendulum swing back on the next matchday? The Expected Goals models say clearly: What's too good to be true usually corrects itself. Lausanne and Servette can hope that their strong performances finally translate into points. One thing is certain: In a league where a 21.5-point difference between reality and merit is possible, everything is still open – and every matchday can bring new miracles.
