The Ticino Sleight of Hand: Lugano Conjures Points Out of Thin Air, St. Gallen Stares Into an Empty Hat

Hook-Intro

Twelve matchdays have been played, and slowly but surely the Super League is turning into a stage for illusionists. Six matches, 23 goals, and right in the middle of it all sits FC Lugano, currently operating like a card sharp in their own casino – 34 points against an xP value of just 18.5. Anyone who thinks football is predictable clearly didn't watch this matchday. Time to put the numbers under the microscope and work out who really deserves to celebrate – and who just happened to be standing in the right place.

Match of the Week

The biggest xG discrepancy of the matchday came, fittingly, from the clash between FC Luzern and FC Sion. A meagre 1-1, in which FC Sion were clearly superior with 1.67 expected goals against Luzern's 1.07 – and still only walked away with a single point. So the Swisspor Arena witnessed a match that exposed the xG statistic as a strict moral guardian: whoever invests more should, in theory, get more back. Didn't quite work out that way. A running joke that fits perfectly with the overall tone of this matchday.

Honourable mention also goes to the spectacle in Lausanne, where FC Thun claimed a full win in a 5-4 thriller against FC Lausanne-Sport despite a lower xG value (1.81 to 1.37). Nine goals, plenty of question marks – and once again the result ran contrary to expectations.

Lucky Devil of the Matchday

No fewer than three teams share the crown for matchday luck with a delta of +2: FC Thun, FC Zürich – and, of course, FC Lugano. The latter remains true to its season-long pattern like no other team in the league. With just one expected point from the match against FC Basel at the Stadio di Cornaredo, they ended up winning all three points. The overall balance is by now almost indecent: 34 actual points against 18.5 xPoints means a luxury surplus of 15.5 points. For comparison: that's more than some teams have accumulated in xPoints all season long. FC Lugano currently sit in the table like a title contender – but in xG terms, they're playing more in the upper midfield.

FC Zürich also have reason to celebrate: a 5-3 away win at the Stadion Wankdorf against BSC Young Boys in an extremely tight xG duel (2.04 to 1.86) brought three points for an expected value of just 1. Zürich clearly know this game well: across the season they stand at 20 points against only 13 xPoints – a diff of +7, making them one of the big beneficiaries of fortune.

xG Victim

Little to laugh about for FC Sion, who carry the matchday's wooden spoon with a delta of -1.5. After a deserved but unrewarded draw against Luzern, a sour aftertaste remains. Close behind are Servette FC and BSC Young Boys, both with a -1 point difference – both came away empty-handed despite their xG numbers telling a different story. Particularly bitter for Young Boys: of all opponents, it was against the lucky FC Zürich that their own chances fizzled out, while the visitors from Zürich made the most of every opportunity.

The Honest Standings

Comparing the official table with the xP table, one can't help but rub one's eyes in disbelief. At the very top of reality sits FC Lugano – but in the honest world of expected values, they land only in fourth place. The league's true number one, according to xP, would be BSC Young Boys, who despite their dropped points against Zürich would deserve top spot with 23.5 xPoints.

The distortion is even more striking with FC St. Gallen: officially only fifth, they would be the league's clear number two by Expected Points – a diff of -3 makes the club the biggest unlucky soul of the entire season. FC Luzern (-2.5) and Servette FC (-1.5) also have every right to feel hard done by. At the other end of the scale, FC Lugano remains the textbook example of a league position that has only limited connection to actual playing quality.

Outlook

The big question for the next matchday: will the Lugano miracle continue, or will the statistics come knocking? Historically speaking, such outliers rarely hold up in the long run – sooner or later, regression to the mean will come calling at Cornaredo. For FC St. Gallen and FC Sion, meanwhile, the rule holds: keep producing such convincing xG numbers, and eventually the matching points will follow. The honest table, in any case, already knows where the music ought to be playing.
