Matchday 14: When Luck Meets Misfortune – and FC Thun Needs Neither
Fairy Tale Hour in the Super League
Once upon a time, there was a matchday when the football gods were particularly moody. While FC Thun proved once again on Matchday 14 that they can make even the impossible possible – namely losing despite xG dominance – small miracles were unfolding elsewhere. FC St. Gallen and FC Lugano perfected the art of efficient winning, while a first-class statistical drama played out at the Stockhorn Arena.
Match of the Week: The Thun xG Massacre
What took place at the Stockhorn Arena wasn't a football match – it was a statistical execution. FC Thun dominated FC Lugano with a hefty 2.54 to 1.5 Expected Goals, yet still left the pitch as losers. An xG difference of 1.04 in favour of the home side, who ended up empty-handed – that's almost art. FC Lugano, meanwhile, impressively proved that you can indeed win with 1.5 xG if you know where the goal is. Efficiency above all – a motto the Ticino side have perfected.
Lucky Devils of the Matchday: St. Gallen and Lugano in Double Pack
Two teams, one destiny: Both FC St. Gallen and FC Lugano pocketed three points despite only deserving half a point according to Expected Points. Delta: 2.5 points each. While the Eastern Swiss beat FC Lausanne-Sport 1-0 at the Kybunpark, even though the Vaud side were the better team with 1.9 to 1.28 xG, FC Lugano simultaneously perfected the art of counter-football in Thun. Both teams can thank their goalkeepers and a portion of good fortune – sometimes timing is everything.
xG Victims: Thun and Lausanne Share the Misery
Shared misery is half the misery? No way! Both FC Thun and FC Lausanne-Sport went home empty-handed despite Expected Points of 2.5. Thun lost at home despite clear xG superiority, while Lausanne played the better game in St. Gallen yet still left as losers. Such matchdays remind us why football is more than statistics – sometimes it's just cruelly unfair.
Honest League Table: The Great Redistribution
A look at the honest table reveals the full extent of the season's distortions. FC Thun tops both tables, but with completely different signs: 58 points in the official league, but "only" 41.5 xP. A difference of 16.5 points – a record!
The real sensation is hiding further down: FC Lugano sits in 3rd place with 46 points, but according to Expected Points would be second-to-last with only 24.5 points. 21.5 points difference – that's almost statistical fraud! Conversely, FC Lausanne-Sport and Servette FC would be significantly better placed in the honest league.
Grasshopper Club Zürich shows it can work the other way too: With only 21 points in 11th place, but 31.5 xP that would actually be enough for 10th place in the honest table.
Outlook: Can This Continue?
The question of all questions: How long can teams like FC Lugano or FC St. Gallen compensate for their xG deficits through pure efficiency? Statistics say: not forever. Regression to the mean is as certain in mathematics as gravity is in physics.
On the flip side, teams like Servette FC and FC Lausanne-Sport continue waiting for their good performances to finally translate into points. With Expected Points of 36.5 and 38 respectively, both have earned far more than their current table positions suggest.
The next matchday will show whether the trends continue or if honest performances finally get rewarded. One thing's for sure: In the Super League, nothing is as it seems – and that makes it damn entertaining.
