Matchday 18: The Great Lucky Rush in the Super League
Young Boys Suffers Historic Thrashing – But Statistically It Wasn't That Bad
What a crazy matchday in the Super League! While some are rubbing their eyes wondering if they read correctly, others are celebrating undeserved three-pointers. Matchday 18 had everything: spectacular goals, bitter defeats, and plenty of statistical head-scratching. Particularly spicy: Three teams each bag two lucky points – a rare triple of the fortune factor.
Game of the Week: Young Boys vs. Grasshopper – When 2:6 Actually Means 1:2
The clash between BSC Young Boys and Grasshopper Club Zürich was the match of the matchday – for every conceivable reason. A 2:6 home debacle for the Bernese that dominated the headlines. But the xG statistics tell a completely different story: 1.43 to 2.22 Expected Goals speak a much less dramatic language than the final result.
Grasshopper Club Zürich, who have been fighting for weeks in the honest table for places that would correspond to their performance level, finally had the necessary luck in front of goal. With an xG difference of 0.79, a victory was certainly deserved – but six goals? That was pure efficiency paired with a portion of fortune that had been missing from the Zurich side for far too long.
For Young Boys, however, it's a riddle of modern football physics: How can you score only two goals from 1.43 xG while your opponent conjures six goals from 2.22 Expected Goals? Sometimes football is just mathematics after all – until it isn't again.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday: The Triple of Fortune
Three teams share the title of biggest lucky devil: FC Lausanne-Sport, FC Basel, and FC Lugano each pocketed two undeserved points. A statistical curiosity that shows how tight things are in the league.
FC Lausanne-Sport prevailed 1:0 in the Geneva derby at Servette FC, although the Expected Goals (1.27 to 0.93) only narrowly favored the Vaudois. One goal was enough – sometimes less really is more.
FC Basel won 2:1 at the swissporarena against FC Luzern, although the home side were significantly more dangerous with 1.86 xG than Basel with their 1.51 Expected Goals. Efficiency beats possession – an old football law that was confirmed once again in Lucerne.
And FC Lugano? They won 1:0 at Stadion Letzigrund against FC Zürich, although Zurich were statistically the better team (1.39 to 1.07 xG). Three points for the Ticinese, who shouldn't actually be at the top in the honest table.
xG Victims: Zürich, Luzern and Servette Suffer Together
The other side of the coin shows a trio of bad luck: FC Zürich, FC Luzern, and Servette FC each left the pitch with one point fewer than their performance deserved. All three teams lost their matches although they statistically deserved at least a draw.
Particularly bitter for FC Zürich: Created the better chances in their own Stadion Letzigrund and still left the pitch as losers. FC Luzern even produced significantly more Expected Goals than eventual winners FC Basel in the swissporarena – and still got nothing. Sometimes football is cruel.
Honest Table Situation: The Great Deception Becomes More and More Obvious
The gap between the official and honest table keeps growing. FC Thun leads both tables – deservedly with 16.5 lucky points ahead of the Expected Points. But behind them, pure chaos reigns.
In the honest table, FC Lausanne-Sport (2nd place instead of 9th!), FC Basel, and Servette FC would stand significantly higher. FC Lausanne-Sport is the league's biggest unlucky team with -8 Expected Points – 8 points fewer than their performance would have deserved.
On the other side, FC Lugano stands as the big beneficiary: 3rd place in the official table, but only 11th place in the honest ranking. The Ticinese have accumulated a whopping 21.5 lucky points – a value that becomes almost statistically improbable.
Grasshopper Club Zürich remains an unlucky team despite the spectacular 6:2 victory: 10.5 points fewer than their performances over the season would have deserved. Sometimes even a goal festival doesn't help against cruel statistics.
Outlook: Who Can Hold Onto the Luck?
After such a fortunate matchday, the question arises: Who can save their undeserved loot over time? Expected Goals are merciless – sooner or later, statistics catch up with everyone. FC Lugano and FC Thun are living dangerously high above their means, while teams like Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Lausanne-Sport hope for the great equalization.
The second half of the season will show whether fortune continues to hold her protective hand over the lucky devils – or whether the honest table slowly becomes the official one. In a league where three teams grab two undeserved points each on one matchday, anything is possible. Even justice.
