Match Day Report: When Lady Luck Plays Swiss Football
The Magic of Match Day 2: Between Reality and Expectation
What a match day! The 2nd match day of the Super League has once again shown us why football is the most beautiful game in the world – and simultaneously the most frustrating for anyone who believes in fairness. While one team wins 4:0 despite the opponent having more Expected Goals, another battles in vain against misfortune. Welcome to the wonderful world of Expected Points!
Game of the Week: FC Sion and the Miracle of Tourbillon
FC Sion 4:0 FC Lugano – this result will go down in the annals of xG history. The Valaisans celebrated a 4:0 thrashing at Stade de Tourbillon that, on paper, should never have happened. With 1.52 Expected Goals against Lugano's 1.86 xG, the game should statistically have ended 2:2 or 1:2 for the Ticino side.
But what is statistics against pure efficiency? FC Sion converted practically every shot into a goal and left Lugano in despair. An xG difference of -0.34 in favor of the visitors, but 4:0 for the hosts – this is football in its most chaotic and beautiful form. Lugano can truly wonder what they've done to anger the football gods.
Lucky Winner of the Match Day: Three-Way Tie for Lady Luck's Favorites
It's a rare case in xG analysis: three teams share the title of luckiest team of the match day. FC Sion, FC Thun, and FC St. Gallen all took three points despite their Expected Points being only a measly one point (Delta: +2.0).
FC St. Gallen deserves special mention for their 4:1 away victory against Servette FC at Stade de Genève. With only 1.67 xG against Servette's 1.59 xG, this was a statistically even game – yet the Eastern Swiss scored four goals and left Geneva baffled. Sometimes precision is simply more important than dominance.
xG Victim: BSC Young Boys and the Draw of Frustration
BSC Young Boys are the perfect example of how Expected Goals can sometimes seem like a cruel joke. At Stadion Schützenwiese against FC Winterthur, the Bernese clearly dominated the game with 1.82 xG against 1.08 xG – and were still only rewarded with a 1:1 draw.
A delta of -1.5 between actual points (1) and Expected Points (2.5) makes Young Boys the great unlucky team of the match day. You can practically picture the frowning faces of Bern's officials when they look at the xG statistics. "We should have won!" – a sentence that's probably uttered in Bern more often than the officials would like.
Honest League Table: The Great Illusion
A look at both tables reveals the true state of affairs in the Super League. FC Thun leads both the official and xP tables, but with a 16.5-point lead over their Expected Points, the Bernese Oberland side is living in a statistical dreamworld.
Even more extreme is FC Lugano's situation: With 46 points they sit in 3rd place, but their xP record (24.5) would relegate them to last place – a difference of an incredible 21.5 points! The Ticino side are this season's personified lucky crew.
On the flip side, the drama of Grasshopper Club Zürich: With only 21 points in second-to-last place, but 31.5 Expected Points that would be good enough for 10th place. The Hoppers are the xG victim par excellence – 10.5 points below what they should have deserved.
Outlook: Regression to the Mean is Coming
Mathematics is merciless: over the long season, such discrepancies usually balance out. FC Lugano won't be able to maintain their lucky streak forever, while Grasshoppers should eventually get the points they deserve.
Match Day 3 will show whether the first corrections set in or whether Lady Luck continues to play her own game in the Super League. One thing is certain: the Expected Goals will keep watching – and reminding us that football is sometimes simply unfair. And that's a good thing.
