FC Zürich, meanwhile, beat Servette 2:1 in the Letzigrund derby, even though Geneva were, statistically, the dominant side at 1.90 to 1.39 xG. Both teams owe the football gods a heartfelt thank-you – the numbers certainly didn't guarantee them these three points.

On the other end of the luck scale, there's pure despair at Servette FC and FC Basel. Both teams racked up 2.5 xP on the day but walked away with zero points – a delta of -2.5. Servette dominated FC Zürich with 1.90 xG but still lost. FC Basel, for their part, created 1.39 xG at home against a sluggish Lausanne-Sport side managing just 0.64, yet still had to accept defeat. Anyone looking only at the official standings sees FC Lugano comfortably on top with 9 points – though with only 6 xP, that cushion is standing on shaky ground. Even more striking is the case of Servette: with a measly 3 points they officially sit in 7th place, yet in the xP table, with 7.5 xP, they'd be top of the league – a gap of a whopping 4.5 points! FC Lausanne-Sport (5 points vs. 2 xP) and FC Basel (6 points vs. 4 xP) are also sitting noticeably prettier than their performances actually warrant. The true losers of perception, alongside Servette, are Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Luzern, whose slim points hauls arguably deserve better.

Outlook

Should regression to the statistical mean assert itself in the coming weeks, FC Lugano and FC Lausanne-Sport face some uncomfortable reality checks, while Servette FC and FC Basel should sooner or later be rewarded with the points their approach play deserves. BSC Young Boys, with their gala performance in Thun, have at least shown they can also compete on the xG front – here, result and performance pleasingly align. For the rest of the league, the rule holds: the honest table may sometimes hurt, but it doesn't lie. Matchday 3 will show whether fortune remains this unevenly distributed across Switzerland.
