When Luck Knocks Three Times: A Matchday of Extremes
The 20th matchday of the Super League couldn't have been more dramatic. While a goal fest exploded in the Schützenwiese, elsewhere the entire spectrum between luck and skill was revealed. A matchday that once again proves: the football gods have their very own idea of justice.
Match of the Week: Lugano Works Magic with Luck
FC Luzern 2:5 FC Lugano – a result that makes xG statisticians shake their heads. With the slimmest of Expected Goals advantages of just 0.07 in favor of the Ticino side, FC Lugano transformed what was essentially a balanced match into an apparent rout. While the Expected Goals suggested a close duel (1.56 vs. 1.63), the scoreboard told a completely different story.
FC Lugano proved once again why, with their 21.5-point difference between the real and honest table, they are the absolute masters at converting the smallest chances into big successes. For Luzern, however, it was an evening to forget – despite a decent performance, they went home with zero points.
Lucky Charm of the Matchday: Lugano Continues Living the Dream
FC Lugano secured the title of biggest lucky charm on the 20th matchday with a delta of +2.0 points (3 points earned, only 1.0 xP deserved). With now a total of 21.5 more points in their account than honestly earned, Lugano leads the ranking of Lucky Clubs by a mile.
The football gods seem to have found a permanent home at the Stadio di Cornaredo. While other teams have to fight for every point, successes practically fall into FC Lugano's lap. A phenomenon that, statistically speaking, must end sooner or later – the question is just when.
xG Victim: Servette and the Curse of the Stade de Genève
Servette FC had to experience firsthand what it means when chance conversion fails. With 1.68 xG against FC Zürich (1.13 xG), the Genevans should have actually left the pitch as winners. Instead, they only managed a 1:1 draw and a painful delta of -1.5 points.
With a total of -8.5 points difference between the official and honest table, Servette FC belongs to the league's biggest unlucky birds. Decent football is played at the Stade de Genève, but the points just won't flow into their account.
Honest Table Situation: The Great Upheaval
A look at the xP table reveals a completely different picture of the Super League: FC Lausanne-Sport, currently only in 9th place, would be second in the honest table – a drama of epic proportions with a -8.0 point difference. Servette FC (-8.5) and Grasshopper Club Zürich (-10.5) are also performing far below their potential.
At the other end of the scale, FC Thun still sits with their fairy-tale lead of 16.5 points over their honest performance. FC Lugano (21.5 points too many) and FC St. Gallen (13.5 point bonus) complete the trio of big winners in this distorted season.
Remarkable: Only FC Zürich (-0.5) and FC Luzern (1.5) are moving close to their statistically expected performance.
Outlook: The Luck Won't Last Forever
With 16 matchdays still remaining, the Super League faces exciting weeks ahead. Regression to the mean is an iron law of football – and that means: FC Lugano will sooner or later have to pay for their lucky streak, while teams like Lausanne-Sport or Servette can hope for better times.
FC Thun at the top of the table may also have more points than deserved, but with a 16.5-point lead, there's still enough buffer remaining. The really exciting question is: Which of the current unlucky teams will be the first to climb out of the statistical hole? Expected Goals don't lie – and they promise several more surprises in the coming weeks.
