Swiss Casinos Report Record Losses: Sports Betting Beats All Gambling Algorithms
The Great Swiss Luck Crash
On matchday 31 of the Super League, apparently all probability calculations collapsed. While the xG oracles were dreaming of statistical justice, the teams decided to write their own laws. The result: A matchday where three teams simultaneously hit the jackpot – and with an audacity that leaves even hardened statisticians speechless.
The Swiss Super League has once again proven to be a paradise for all those who believe that football is an exact science. Spoiler: It's not.
Match of the Week: FC Zürich and the Art of the Impossible
Something happened at Stadion Letzigrund on Sunday evening that should actually be mathematically impossible. FC Zürich beat FC Thun 2:1 – despite Thun having far better chances with 2.27 to 1.01 xG. A discrepancy of 1.26 xG, which is about as likely as winning the lottery.
While FC Thun statistically deserved two and a half points, they collected zero. FC Zürich, meanwhile, converted their mini-chances into three points – a feat that would have impressed even Houdini. That's efficiency on a level that any Swiss watchmaker would respect.
Lucky Winner of the Matchday: Basel and Zürich in a Luck Duel
It's a head-to-head race for the title of biggest lucky winner: Both FC Basel and FC Zürich have exceeded their xP value by a whopping 2.5 points. FC Basel won at Stadion Schützenwiese against FC Winterthur 2:0, even though Winterthur had better chances with 1.66 to 0.83 xG.
The Basel side has thus continued their seasonal lucky streak – they stand 12 points above their xP value in 3rd place, even though they're honestly only the 7th best club in the league. That's Swiss precision – but at having luck, not playing football.
xG Victims: Thun and Winterthur Share the Bad Luck
Two teams must share the inglorious title of unlucky birds of the matchday. Both FC Thun and FC Winterthur collected 2.5 points fewer than their Expected Points suggested.
FC Thun remains in 1st place in both the official and xP table despite their defeat at FC Zürich – albeit with the astronomical luck bonus of 20.5 points. You could say: They're leading the league even though they've only played the 50.5th best football of the season. That's almost philosophical.
Honest Table Position: The Great Swiss Illusion
The honest table reveals the full extent of the seasonal distortions: FC Thun would honestly stand in 1st place despite leading the table – but behind them it gets wild. FC Sion climbs from 5th place to honest 2nd place, while heavyweights like FC St. Gallen (officially 2nd, honestly 5th) and FC Basel (officially 3rd, honestly 7th) have massively over-achieved points-wise.
FC Lugano provides the most extreme example: Officially in 4th place with 51 points, but honestly only the 11th best club with 30.5 Expected Points. A difference of 20.5 points – just as big as table-toppers Thun.
At the other end of the honesty scale, Grasshopper Club Zürich finds itself again: With only 24 points, rock bottom in last place, even though they actually deserved 37 Expected Points. 13 points of bad luck – that hurts, even by Zurich standards.
Outlook: Only Five Matchdays Left Until Truth
With only five outstanding matchdays remaining, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the lucky winners to maintain their facades. Mathematics is patient, but relentless – sooner or later it catches up with everyone.
It will be particularly exciting for teams like FC Lugano and FC Basel, who are living far beyond their means. Can they pull their lucky streak through to the end of the season? Or will they still be caught up by xG realism?
One thing is certain: In a league where three teams can simultaneously be celebrated as the biggest lucky winners of the matchday, anything is possible. Even justice – but I wouldn't bet on it.
