Swiss Football's Game of Chance: When the Ball Becomes a Lottery Ball
The 6th matchday of the Super League could just as well have taken place in a casino. While the honest numbers tell one story, the official table writes an entirely different fairy tale. This becomes most apparent in the duel between FC Zürich and Servette FC – where bad luck transformed into good fortune and vice versa.
Game of the Week: FC Zürich vs. Servette FC – When xG Values Deceive
A textbook example of why football is the most beautiful of all games of chance unfolded at the Stadion Letzigrund on matchday 6. FC Zürich won 2-1 against Servette FC, even though the Expected Goals painted a completely different picture: 1.65 to 2.49 for the visitors from Geneva. An xG discrepancy of a whopping 0.84 in favor of the Genevans.
Servette FC dominated the game according to all statistical rules of the art, should have traveled home with 2.5 Expected Points under normal chance conversion – instead they went away empty-handed. FC Zürich, meanwhile, converted their more modest opportunities with ice-cold precision and collected three points, even though only 0.5 Expected Points were really in it. A delta of 2.5 points in favor of the Zurichers – that's either efficiency of the highest class or simply pure luck.
Lucky Devil of the Matchday: FC Zürich – The Art of the Cold Shower
Let's say it straight: FC Zürich was the absolute lucky devil of matchday 6. With a delta of +2.5 between real points and Expected Points, the Zurichers showed how to make much from little. 1.65 xG was enough for three points, while their opponents went away empty despite 2.49 xG.
This is the kind of efficiency that drives statisticians to white heat and moves fans to tears. FC Zürich sits with 31 points in 8th place, although the xP table assesses them with 31.5 points as practically identical. The Zurichers are thus one of the few teams standing almost exactly where they belong based on performance – when considering the overall season trajectory.
xG Victim: Servette FC – When Genevan Precision Finds Itself Offside
The suffering of Servette FC is almost tragic. On matchday 6, they should have deserved 2.5 Expected Points but went home with zero points. A delta of -2.5 points – that hurts. And it's symptomatic of the Genevans' entire season.
Servette FC sits with 28 points in 10th place, although they would belong in 4th place according to Expected Points with 36.5 points. A discrepancy of -8.5 points over the entire season – only Grasshopper Club Zürich (-10.5) and FC Lausanne-Sport (-8) are even bigger xG victims. The Genevans are the prime example that beautiful football doesn't automatically mean points. They often play well but are consistently punished by the football god.
Honest Table Situation: Thun on Top, But Not Alone
The official table shows FC Thun confidently at the top with 58 points. But even in the xP table, the Bernese Oberlanders lead with 41.5 Expected Points – a luck bonus of +16.5 points. That's an impressively large amount of luck, but they still lead deservedly.
The biggest beneficiaries of luck are currently FC Lugano (+21.5) and FC St. Gallen (+13.5). FC Lugano sits in 3rd place with 46 points but belongs in 11th place according to Expected Points with only 24.5 points. That's luck in its purest form.
The biggest unlucky birds remain Grasshopper Club Zürich (-10.5), Servette FC (-8.5) and FC Lausanne-Sport (-8). All three teams would fare significantly better in an xP table. The Hoppers, for example, would be in the secure midfield with 31.5 Expected Points instead of in second-to-last place.
Outlook: Luck is a Fickle Bird
Matchday 6 has once again proven: In Swiss football, luck is unequally distributed. While teams like FC Thun and FC Lugano continue to benefit from their bonus, Servette FC and the Grasshoppers must hope that luck eventually turns.
For the next matchday: The xG numbers don't forget. Teams that consistently generate more Expected Goals than their opponents will be rewarded sooner or later. Conversely, bad luck will eventually catch up with even the biggest lucky devils. The only question is: When does the soap bubble burst? FC Lugano with their extreme luck bonus of +21.5 points is particularly in focus. Can they continue their fairy-tale year, or will statistics strike back?
One thing is certain: In the Super League, nothing is certain – except that Expected Goals will eventually be proven right.
